Paint paint paint!

Well, the primer went we'll, but the colourful paint was next!

We chose the colours red, blue and green.

But after painting we put a couple of layers of varnish over the paint so that it was protected.

It was a big day for us but we had fun!

Prime Coating

Not too long ago, our theatre was plain.

We really wanted to paint our project, but we needed to prime it first.

It isn't as easy as it looks, the priming needed more than one coat!

But finally we finished our priming but the primer was white, and not colourfu.

We had made lots of progress on the project, we really needed to show our clients, Room 14!

Room 14 LOVED the theatre! They would love it if it was finished!

Sanding the Theatre

Today Technology 7 looked at the theatre and the hazards when we noticed splinters.

We started work to sand the theatre to remove the splinter hazard.

We used masks and goggles to protect us from dust flying in our face and breathing it in.

We used sand paper to sand the theatre by hand.

Building the Skeleton

Today Technology 7 have started building the skeleton of the puppet theatre.

We sawed out the sides, front, floor and ceiling.

 

We attached two of the panels together.

Building the Frame

Today the Technology Group were working on the rest of the frame.

We were doing it on a Tuesday and we got split in half.

For the first half, Eric, Slade and Caleb went.  For the second half, Jayden, Neo and Kyle went.

Group 1 went ahead and measured and collected some more wood, then put them together by creating a frame.

For the second half of the day, the front was attached by Group 2 and Mr Jackson.

It was a long day but definitely worth it.

Thank you Bunnings

Bunnings Warehouse has donated us some tools.

We have received  saws, goggles, ear protectors, hammers, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, squares, masks and a tenon saw with an mitre block.

Caleb and Kyle went to get the tools from Bunnings Warehouse.

The First Day of the Build

Today the Technology group started building the Puppet theatre for Room 14.

We used materials from underneath the hall to build the theatre.

We started measuring and then sawing wood for the theatre.

Our measurements were:

1200mm wide, 1200mm high & 500mm deep.

Our stage is 800mm off the ground, the stage is 250mm high & there is a 150mm space between the stage and the roof.

  

We then started working on the front, the roof & the floor.

We are going to start attaching most of the parts next week.

Practicing construction skills

Today Technology 7 set goals. We have Practical, Personal and Learning goals.

After Morning Tea, Mr Jackson set us a challenge to screw 4 screws and secure 4 nails into two pieces of wood. The screws and nails had to be exactly 4cm from the edge and spaced 2cm apart also they were not allowed to poke out the other side.

The skills that Mr Jackson taught us were,

1). Never choke a hammer always old it at the bottom of the handle.

2). Measure twice for accuracy.

3). Always hit nails with the flat of the hammer.

4). Screws go in much easier and straighter if you pre drill a hole.

5). When hammering gentle tap then hard tap helps with our aim.

6). If we don't want nails to go all the way in, put a mark on the nail to show when it is in far enough.

7). Hold the drill steady and don't wiggle it when pulling the drill out.

we had fun doing this activity and it has helped us learn new construction skills.

Individual designs and building a bench hook.

This week we used our design brief to draw three possible designs.  We attempted to include all of the elements from the brief in our designs.  Then we created an individual final design which next week we will share with the group to create a final group design.

For the practical part of our session we created a bench hook to help us with our sawing.  This was designed to hook over the saw horses and give us a better base for sawing on.  We found it much easier and quicker to saw when using the hook

Researching theatres

Today we discussed the ideas that our clients (room 14) put forward to us.  We measured how wide the puppet theatre should be using three of our group and a tape measure.  The width will be 1300mm wide.  The height of the stage will be 800mm from the ground.

We have also researched ideas for our puppet theatres.  We have looked at some ideas from ancient, shadow puppet, public, movie  and other various types of puppet theatre.  We have discovered the common things that theatres have are curtains and stages.  Some of the theatres also had chalk boards, lights, wheels, whiteboards, closing curtains with pulleys, bright colours, pictures, seats, and different sets.

First session

Yesterday the technology 7 group met for the first time. During our first session we discussed the program, Came up with group rules, Decided what resources we would need to help us complete our project, we constructed and published letters to the manager of Bunnings to ask for assistance and touched base with room 14, our project clients.  Watch our blog grow as we share more of what we achieve!

 These are the rules that we have in Technology 7,

 .    Put my hand up before I am allowed to talk,

  .    Show everyone respect,

  .    Manners cost you nothing so use them,

  .    Be sensible,

  .    Inside voices,

  .    If you have nothing nice to say don't say it,

  .    Ask to go out of the room before you do.

  .   We don't touch any materials in the room unless asked to.

  .   No pointing at others in the group.

We have all decided on these rules and we might add more.

This is a blog for the Howick Primary School technology group.  Our first project will be to design and construct a puppet theatre for a junior classroom.  The process will involve consulting the clients, researching designs, designing our own theatre, building the theatre and finally evaluating the success of the theatre's design and construction.  Watch as our project unfolds.
